PASCAGOULA, Miss. (AP) - The new Jackson County Adult Detention Center is scheduled to open next spring and Sheriff Charles Britt and other jail staffs are working to get a full-time chaplain at the facility.

Jail officials tell The Sun Herald (https://bit.ly/1e3tJwS ), if secured, the chaplain will be from Good News Jail and Prison Ministry, a nonprofit group in Richmond, Va. The ministry is funded through donations from businesses, individuals, churches and organizations and the group helps restore the lives of inmates through counseling and volunteer recruitment.

In the current jail, there is not an area dedicated for religious worship and inmates currently participate in religious practices in their housing areas with volunteers that visit during the week.

Construction recently began on the new jail, which will house 750 beds.
