ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - A registered sex offender has been charged with beating and sexually assaulting a former friend, who fled from his apartment naked and was helped by neighbors who offered her a blanket and shelter.

The Pioneer Press reported (https://bit.ly/1kjKpE2 ) Monday that neighbors told police they heard noise and then saw a woman running naked from an apartment belonging to 53-year-old Michael D. Burns. Two covered the woman with a blanket and called a security guard.

One neighbor went into the apartment to confront Burns and emerged with some of the woman’s clothing.

According to a criminal complaint, the woman told police that Burns punched her in the face and choked her until she passed out. The woman, who is deaf, also said Burns had been stealing her Social Security checks and threatened to kill her.

Burns has been charged with criminal sexual conduct, terroristic threats and domestic assault by strangulation. He denied stealing the checks and said he had consensual sex with the woman.

He is a registered sex offender after being convicted in 1996 of first-degree criminal sexual conduct in Ramsey County.
