BRANDON, Fla. (AP) - One man is dead following an early-morning altercation with Hillsborough County Sheriff’s deputies in a Brandon neighborhood.

Deputies shot Lew Tyree, 41, early Tuesday in a suburb near Tampa.

Sheriff’s spokeswoman Cristal Bermudez Nunez said the man had burned his clothes, cut a cat with a butcher knife and then charged at arriving deputies while holding the knife and a 20-pound barbell. Deputies said the man was trying to break a window of an apartment when they arrived.

Nunez said the deputies tried to calm the man. When that didn’t work, they tried using a stun gun on him.

“At that point, he turned around and was about five feet away from the deputies,” she told The Tampa Tribune (https://bit.ly/1jO828r ). “He was not listening to commands and he was armed with a large butcher knife and charged the deputies.”

Officials say all three deputies fired multiple shots.

The three deputies involved - Steve Gutierrez, 35, Marina Stroud, 34, and James Maiello, 25 - were not injured. They’ve been placed on administrative leave, as a part of the department’s standard procedures.

The suspect, whose name hasn’t been released, was taken to Brandon Regional Hospital. He died about an hour later.
