WAHPETON, N.D. (AP) - A woman who once operated the state Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle office in Wahpeton has pleaded not guilty to a financial misconduct charge.

KFGO in Fargo (https://bit.ly/1doiXUz ) reports that 72-year-old Catherine Muehler remains free after agreeing to appear in all future court dates. Her trial has not been scheduled.

Authorities say Muehler can’t account for $100,000 owed to the state. She’s charged with felony misapplication of entrusted property, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

Muehler’s attorney, Michael McCartney, couldn’t be reached.

The Motor Vehicle branch offices aren’t run by the state but by independent contractors. The Wahpeton office was closed last May due to what officials said was a breach of contract. A new office opened in July in the Wahpeton-Breckenridge Area Chamber of Commerce.
