PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A special election to fill a vacant seat on the Philadelphia City Council will be held in conjunction with the May 20 primary election in Pennsylvania.

Council President Darrell Clarke said Tuesday that the election will fill the at-large seat vacated by Bill Green, who is now chairman of the School Reform Commission.

The winner of the May 20 special election will serve the remainder of Green’s term, which runs until Jan. 4, 2016.

Parties will have until April 8 to file nomination certificates. The Democratic and Republican parties will select candidates based on their internal party rules, and anyone intending to run as an independent may begin circulating petitions March 24.
