GREENE, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say they’ve charged an upstate New York man with stabbing another man to death at the suspect’s rural home.

State police say Kyle Whitfield of the Chenango County village of Greene got into a fight with 33-year-old James Button Jr. of Greene and killed him Monday afternoon.

Troopers haven’t said what led to the fight.

Whitfield, who turned 29 Tuesday, was charged with second-degree murder. He’s being held without bail in the county jail.

Whitfield’s public defender, Zachary Wentworth, says a not guilty plea was entered on Whitfield’s behalf at this arraignment. Wentworth says he didn’t have enough details on the case yet to comment. He says a preliminary hearing is scheduled for Friday.

Greene is 55 miles southeast of Syracuse.
