BRENTWOOD, Tenn. (AP) - Heather Butler of UT Martin has been voted the Ohio Valley Conference player of the year with her teammate Jasmine Newsome repeating as the league’s defensive player of the year.

The OVC announced the awards Tuesday.

Butler also was the freshman of the year in 2010-11 and becomes only the sixth player in OVC history to win both awards. She already is the OVC’s all-time leading scorer and currently has 2,811 points in helping UT Martin take the regular season title.

UT Martin teammate Ashia Jones is the league’s freshman of the year.

Rick Peitri of Jacksonville State is the coach of the year. He coached the Gamecocks to their first tournament berth since 2011 with eight league wins the most since 2007-08.
