WESTBROOK, Maine (AP) - A member of the Westbrook School Committee has notified the city she intends to file a lawsuit claiming she was wrongfully charged with hindering a criminal case against a school employee.

Suzanne Joyce was charged last year with hindering the apprehension or prosecution of Dereck Gilman, a special-education technician at Westbrook Middle School accused of engaging in sexual acts with a student.

Charges against Joyce were dismissed in September. Charges against Gilman also were dismissed as part of a plea agreement.

The Portland Press Herald (https://bit.ly/1lwdrUP ) reports that in a notice of claim sent to the city on Feb. 25, Joyce’s attorney says she intends to bring action against the city and a police officer.

City officials said Monday they are confident the matter will be resolved in their favor.
