RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A bill requiring textbooks used by Virginia students to note that the Sea of Japan is also known as the East Sea is headed to Gov. Terry McAuliffe.

The House of Delegates voted Wednesday to approve the Senate bill, which has strong support from northern Virginia’s large Korean American community.

The Embassy of Japan opposes the legislation and worked to get it defeated.

The measure had gained approval in both chambers by wide margins earlier in the session, but it appeared to be in jeopardy. Some black lawmakers said the General Assembly was ignoring other problems with Virginia’s textbooks with respect to African American and Native American history.

McAuliffe has said he will sign the bill.
