MARTINSBURG, W.Va. (AP) - A man accused of tampering with crypts at a cemetery in Berkeley County is scheduled to stand trial in May.

Thirty-year-old Richard Ruffner of Martinsburg is charged with 23 counts of disinterment or displacement of a body and one conspiracy count.

The charges stem from an incident on May 12, 2013, in which several crypts at Rosedale Cemetery near Martinsburg were disturbed. Police say nearly two dozen caskets were broken into.

The Journal (https://bit.ly/1hLOu3K ) reports that Ruffner pleaded not guilty during an arraignment this week. Berkeley County Circuit Court Judge Gray Silver III scheduled Ruffner’s trial for May 14.

An arraignment hearing for co-defendant David Bowers III has been postponed after the public defender’s office withdrew from representing him, citing a conflict of interest.
