CROWN POINT, Ind. (AP) - A northwestern Indiana man has been sentenced to 80 years in prison for fatally shooting a convenience store clerk during a robbery.

A Lake County jury convicted 22-year-old Jeremy Blue of Merrillville in November of murder and robbery in the March 2012 shooting death of 48-year-old Judi Simpson-Beaver.

Prosecutors say Simpson-Beaver’s last words were, “Jeremy, why are you doing this?”

The (Munster) Times reports (https://bit.ly/1fH56p1 ) Lake Criminal Court Judge Clarence Murray called the crime “a vicious and heinous killing” during Tuesday’s sentencing hearing.

Murray commended Simpson-Beaver’s relatives for their strength during the two-week trial and the numerous times they had to watch video surveillance of the killing.

Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Robert Persin says Blue has exhibited no remorse for the killing and continues to show disdain for authority.
