LOUISA, Va. (AP) - A Louisa woman accused of giving her 6-month-old son a lethal amount of Benadryl has pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter.

Media outlets report that 32-year-old Tristan T. Goodwin also pleaded guilty on Wednesday to felony child neglect. She faces up to 20 years in prison.

Sentencing is scheduled May 15 in Louisa County Circuit Court.

Goodwin’s son, Tyler, died on March 17, 2013 at the family’s home.

Commonwealth’s Attorney Rusty McGuire says emergency crews originally thought the boy’s death was due to sudden infant death syndrome. An autopsy showed 4.8 milligrams per liter of Benadryl in the baby’s system.

McGuire says he hopes the case sends a message to not give Benadryl to babies or young children.
