HEMLOCK, N.Y. (AP) - A 61-year-old man faces murder charges after his wife’s body was found in the woods behind his Livingston County home.

Livingston County Sheriff Thomas Dougherty tells media outlets that Gary Flemke was arraigned Tuesday on a charge of second-degree murder in the shooting death of his 58-year-old wife, Marcia.

A deputy went to Flemke’s house in the hamlet of Hemlock Friday evening after an out-of-state resident said he couldn’t reach his mother. Nobody was home, so deputies started a search. They found Gary Flemke in the nearby village and later found his wife’s body in the woods.

Flemke was initially charged with evidence tampering and jailed on $250,000 bail, but bail was retracted after the charge was upgraded to murder. It could not be immediately determined if he has a lawyer.
