BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) - Some state lawmakers want to force the sale of the property that once was the Port of Port Royal and have the State Ports Authority auction it to the highest bidder if no buyer is found.

The Beaufort Gazette reports (https://bit.ly/1e5cniR ) a bill introduced Wednesday by Beaufort Rep. Shannon Erickson would force the sale by June 30th of next year.

The General Assembly ordered the Ports Authority to sell the 317-acre property a decade ago. Several development deals have since fallen through.

The original deadline was the end of 2009.

The Ports Authority operated a port on the land from 1958 through 2004.
