OXNARD, Calif. (AP) - A man wearing earphones who danced on a power pole while ignoring pleas from police in Southern California has been lifted to safety.

The Ventura County Star says (https://bit.ly/1hTjfo8) authorities were inundated with calls late Thursday morning about a man sitting, and then dancing, high atop the pole in Oxnard.

Police say they tried to talk to the man, but he did not acknowledge them.

Several hours later, Southern California Edison workers with help from firefighters were able to use heavy equipment to bring the man down.

He was taken to a mental health facility for evaluation.

Police later said the 22-year-old man, whose name was not released, told them he was despondent over recent family issues.

Official say the spot where he was sitting did not contain live wires.
