SAUGUS, Mass. (AP) - State police say a man walking along U.S. Route 1 in Saugus has been struck and killed by a vehicle.

Police say 55-year-old David Gartland of Cambridge was struck on the northbound side of the highway at about 8:40 p.m. Thursday.

He was taken to a Lynn hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Preliminary investigation suggests Gartland was struck as he was walking in the center lane.

The SUV that struck Gartland stopped at the scene and no charges have been filed.

The death, including why the victim was walking in the highway, remain under investigation.
