SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - The manufacturer implicated in a massive fish kill on the Ogeechee River in 2011 has been sold to a South Carolina firm.

Milliken & Company announced Friday that it had acquired Westex Inc., the parent company of King America Finishing.

An estimated 39,000 fish died in 2011 near a King America Finishing textile outfall pipe into the Ogeechee River. Environmental officials found the plant was discharging a fire retardant into the river without a permit. Investigators said pollution was likely among several factors that killed the fish.

The Savannah Morning News (https://bit.ly/SJNIgb ) reports the textile facility in Georgia will continue to be subject to the permits and consent agreement already in place with King America Finishing.
