BIG FLATS, N.Y. (AP) - A person who drowned in a boating accident on the Chemung River has been identified.

The Chemung County Sheriff’s Office says the victim is 58-year-old Donna Bailey of Corning. Her body was recovered around 7:35 p.m. Sunday in the Town of Big Flats.

Authorities say Bailey and her 32-year-old daughter set off around 2 p.m. in a two-person kayak, and the craft hit an object and overturned while negotiating a bend in the river. Investigators believe the kayak struck a partially submerged limb and pinned the two women inside.

The daughter managed to free herself and swim to shore but was unable to help her mother.

Bailey was pronounced dead at the scene by the Chemung County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Deputies say neither woman was wearing a life jacket.
