CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. (AP) - The Jefferson County Fair Board has canceled the pig show at this year’s event amid concerns about a deadly virus.

The Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus first appeared in the United States in May 2013 and has since spread to about half the country.

West Virginia University Extension agent Michael Harman tells The Journal (https://bit.ly/1lbJ94O ) that there will be no pigs at the Jefferson County Fair this year.

Harman says the West Virginia Department of Agriculture recommended that fairs cancel pig shows. The final decision is up to each county fair’s board.

No cases of the virus have been reported in Jefferson County.
