GREEN VALLEY, W.Va. (AP) - An infected raccoon is the first confirmed case of rabies in Mercer County this year.
The Mercer County Health Department says a dog attacked the raccoon on May 3 in the Wright Mountain area. Samples tested by the state showed that the raccoon was rabid.
Sanitarian Andrew Whittaker tells the Bluefield Daily Telegraph (https://bit.ly/1nEAqf6 ) that residents should be watch for animals with unusual behavior.
He says the rabid raccoon was out during the day. That’s a sign of rabies because raccoons typically are nocturnal.
Whittaker says other signs are unusual aggressiveness, sluggishness and confusion.
