OTSEGO, Mich. (AP) - Officials say harmless bacteria caused a sheen that was spotted on the waters of the Kalamazoo River in southwestern Michigan.

The Kalamazoo Gazette says (https://bit.ly/1nF55J7 ) a Michigan Department of Environmental Quality water quality went to the site in Otsego after the sheen was reported last week.

Jerrod Sanders, district supervisor for the DEQ’s Water Resources Division, says the cause was iron bacteria, which doesn’t present any significant public health threat. The area where the sheen was seen is about 35 miles south of Grand Rapids.

There had been concerns that the sheen might have been from oil, but that wasn’t the case.
