OXFORD, Miss. (AP) - The City of Oxford is collecting an additional $10 on speeding and other moving violation tickets.

The Oxford Eagle reports (https://bit.ly/1mM3phe ) the extra money will help pay for future communication equipment for the Oxford Police Department.

The board of aldermen approved the extra assessment this past week.

State law allows cities to add a local assessment to moving violation fees to be used for future purchases of wireless radio communications.

Police Chief Joey East says the money will be deposited into a special fund in the Department of Public Safety’s Office of Public Safety Planning.

Speeding tickets are now $164 before the additional fee.

The extra fee took effect with the board of aldermen’s approval.
