MONROEVILLE, Pa. (AP) - The family of the only victim still hospitalized after last month’s a mass stabbing at a Pittsburgh-area high school said the boy is making “great progress” and has even been watching Pittsburgh Penguins playoff games on television.

Greg Keener, 15, was among 20 students and one security guard wounded April 9 at Franklin Regional High School in Murrysville, about 15 miles east of Pittsburgh.

Though he’s in fair condition, Keener remained in the intensive care unit Tuesday at Forbes Regional Hospital in nearby Monroeville, according to a statement the hospital released from the boy’s family. Keener will likely leave the ICU in a few days, they said.

“We are happy to report that Greg is alert and he is able to engage in daily activities including sitting in a chair, some walking, and watching the Penguins,” the statement said.

Fellow student Alex Hribal, 16, has been charged as an adult with 21 counts of attempted homicide and aggravated assault and a school weapons violation, for allegedly attacking the victims with two 8-inch kitchen knives taken from his home.

Hribal remains in a juvenile detention center. Defense attorney Patrick Thomassey, has said he’s hoping a Westmoreland County judge will move the case to juvenile court - where Hribal would face incarceration only until he is 21 - instead of Common Pleas Court where Hribal faces decades in prison if convicted.

Hribal is scheduled for a preliminary hearing June 4 to determine whether there’s sufficient evidence for him to stand trial.

Thomassey, who has acknowledged Hribal stabbed the victims and said he may waive that hearing, has nonetheless argued that the boy’s mental state should be considered in determining whether the case moves to juvenile court or in the boy’s defense if it doesn’t.
