LOWELL, Mass. (AP) - Prosecutors say a 76-year-old Lowell man visiting his wife in a nursing home sexually assaulted another resident during the visit.

Raul Cardenas was held on $1,000 cash bail after pleading not guilty in Lowell District Court on Monday to indecent assault and battery on a person with an intellectual disability.

Authorities say Cardenas was visiting his wife, who has dementia, at the Fairhaven Healthcare Center on Sunday when a staff member witnessed him sexually assaulting another female patient who also has dementia.

The Sun (https://bit.ly/1jcOq0n ) reports that a judge said if Cardenas makes bail, he can only visit his wife under supervision.

A defense attorney asked that Cardenas be released on personal recognizance, noting he has a small apartment and his family will supervise his visits to the nursing home.
