MERIDIAN, Miss. (AP) - Meridian Mayor Percy Bland has announced the police department is launching a new Gang Task Force Unit.

WTOK-TV in Meridian reports (https://bit.ly/QFtySx ) Bland believes many recent crimes including a fatal weekend shooting may be gang-related.

Interim Police Chief Buck Roberts says the department has gang experts and officers who have dealt with gang issues.

Bland says the city will be stricter on enforcement of relates to curfews at night and during the day. He said the city will also hold parents accountable for their children.

Currently, the curfew for people 17 and under in Meridian during the school year is 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday. It extends to midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. After a third offense parents can face a charge and a fine.
