NEWTON, Ala. (AP) - Bubba doesn’t just walk around Kathy’s Kountry Korner. He struts.

And sure, he’s been known to show off to impress his girlfriend, but don’t mistake his swagger for arrogance. Call it more of a genetic trait.

You see, Bubba isn’t an employee, but rather a tenant of sorts.

Along with his on-again, off-again girlfriend Sissy, Bubba is part of a tandem of peacocks that patrol the outside of this restaurant and service station on the side of U.S. 231 just south of Ozark.

“(Visitors) are amazed,” said Kathy Dickerson, owner of the restaurant. “I see people out here all the time taking pictures.”

The peacocks are something of a package deal with the building. It’s been their home for years, and they are unlikely to move any time soon.

When Dickerson bought the property in 2012, the previous owner made one thing clear - Bubba and Sissy had to stay.

“He said they had been here for a while,” said Dickerson, who had no issues with the arrangement. “You don’t really have to take care of them too much. When we were working on the place, we’d leave the doors open and they came right on inside. We started feeding them, and they got where they would eat crackers and peanuts.”

Bubba and Sissy have some obvious differences.

Bubba is larger and more colorful, with beautiful feathers that he’ll spread on occasion.

Sissy, meanwhile, is known for her sassy attitude.

“She’s got an attitude,” Dickerson said. “I’m not leery of him.”

It’s easy to tell neither peacock is afraid of humans.

They allow visitors to approach, feed and observe them without any incidents.

“They’ve never been any trouble,” Dickerson said. “I’ve had some people seeing if I wanted to get rid of them. I’ll say, ‘nah.’ This is their home.”
