NORTH SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say a man is in custody after he assaulted a police officer who responded to a chain-reaction crash on a Syracuse-area road.

Police in the village of North Syracuse tell local media that the man may have hit road signs and some vehicles on Route 11 Monday afternoon. Officials say the man then rear-ended a car, causing a chain-reaction accident involving four vehicles.

Police say the man got out of his vehicle and began hitting an officer who arrived on the scene. The officer was taken to a Syracuse hospital. Details of his injuries haven’t been released.

The man accused of assaulting the officer was taken in for questioning. Police way charges are pending.
