ELOY, Ariz. (AP) - The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting involving an Eloy police officer.

The shooting happened early Sunday after officers responded to a burglary alarm at a business. The owner told officers someone took items from outside the business.

Officers began walking through the surrounding neighborhoods to see if they could find the suspect or the missing property.

That’s when a man identified as 25-year-old Victor Arenas yelled at Officer Richard Timmes for shining his flashlight at him. Authorities say Arenas then pointed a gun at the officer.

Timmes yelled at Arenas to put the gun down but he fired at the officer instead. Timmes returned fire, hitting Arenas. The man ran a short distance before collapsing. He was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
