NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Somebody threw two pregnant rabbits from a car window in Metairie, breaking one rabbit’s rear legs and the other rabbit’s right rear leg, the Louisiana SPCA said Thursday.

The SPCA is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the person’s arrest and conviction.

A woman brought the rabbits to Metairie veterinarian Gregory Rich after seeing them thrown from the car in Lafreniere Park on Tuesday, Louisiana SPCA spokeswoman Alicia Haefele said.

The woman told Jefferson Parish SPCA investigators that she could not remember the car’s license plate or identify the occupants, Parish President John Young wrote in a letter to Rich.

He said investigators asked her to call immediately if she sees the car again.

The incident could be prosecuted as aggravated cruelty to animals, a felony resulting in one to 10 years in prison and a $5,000 to $25,000 fine, Haefele said.
