BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) - A Brownsville jury has acquitted a former Cameron County sheriff’s deputy of charges he used excessive force during a traffic stop where a man was taken to the ground after he already was in handcuffs.
The jury returned its verdict Thursday in a second day of deliberations in the case of Arturo Ramos. He was indicted earlier this year and charged with official oppression.
Ramos’s attorney, Nat Perez, said Ramos had an unblemished record and acted appropriately when motorist Alejandro Rodriguez didn’t immediately stop after running a red light in November 2013.
The Brownsville Herald reports (https://bit.ly/1verjGh ) testimony showed Rodriguez was belligerent and moved toward Ramos. Prosecutors insisted the move, while Rodriguez was handcuffed, wasn’t enough to merit his takedown to the ground.
