AIKEN, S.C. (AP) - An exit on Interstate 20 in Aiken County has been named for a deputy killed as he directed traffic.

The Aiken Standard reports (https://bit.ly/1oED6w5 ) a ceremony was held last week to name Exit 22 on I-20 for Aiken County deputy Jason Sheppard.

Sheppard was struck by an SUV and killed in December 2006 as he directed traffic at a fire on U.S. Highway 1 near the exit. Sheriff Michael Hunt says Sheppard was a deputy for two years and gave up his life because he wanted to help others.

Signs in honor of Sheppard have already been placed on I-20, and will soon be placed on U.S. 1 leading up to the interchange.
