BROOKPORT, Ill. (AP) - The tiny southern Illinois city of Brookport is showing signs of recovery six months after a tornado swept through the area, killing four people.
WSIL-TV (https://bit.ly/1mNpIn1 ) reports cleanup efforts are over in the 1,000-resident Ohio River community. But the effort continues to put people who were displaced by the Nov. 17 tornado into their new homes.
WSIL says the Massac and Pope County Recovery Committee is using federal money or insurance to build homes for those who can’t afford to rebuild.
Alderman Larry Calls says the group has approval to build new homes on six sites. He says he’d like to see just as many more.
The Brookport twister was one of about two dozen that rolled across Illinois that day. It stayed on the ground for 11 miles.
