SPEARFISH, S.D. (AP) - The hill where the crucifixion of Jesus Christ was re-enacted in the Black Hills for decades is the proposed site for a statue of Jesus.

KOTA-TV (https://bit.ly/RPT0FL ) reports a local nonprofit is looking for artists for the project in the area known as Spearfish Hill.

The crucifixion was re-enacted on the hill and a 6,000-seat amphitheater was used for the Black Hills Passion Play from 1939 through 2008.

Rand Williams is the owner of the amphitheater and is also behind the effort to erect the statue.

Williams last year told Spearfish City Council members that the statue would be taller than 35 feet.

Council members showed skepticism and raised concerns about violating the separation of church and state as the statue would be on city-owned land.
