WACO, Texas (AP) - A 92-year-old Central Texas woman born in a Tennessee sharecropper’s cabin has been denied a voter identification certificate because she lacks a birth certificate.
Ruby Barber tells the Waco Tribune-Herald (https://bit.ly/1mQ3xwt) that she took her Medicare card, her Social Security card and an expired driver’s license to a Texas Department of Public Safety office to apply for the election identification certificate. But officials said she must have a birth certificate to obtain the certificate under the new state voter identification law.
Those applying for a certificate must show a birth certificate or naturalization papers to prove citizenship. McLennan County elections administrator Kathy Van Wolfe says voters who lack a photo ID must return within six days of voting with valid ID for the vote to be counted.
