BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Federal prosecutors say a former bookkeeper has pleaded guilty to embezzling from a country club in Dorset, Vermont, where she worked.

Sixty-one-year-old Diane Schmaler of Cossayuna, New York, pleaded guilty last week to a charge of interstate transportation of stolen money.

Court records say Schamaler had been employed as a bookkeeper and manager of finance and administration at the Dorset Field Club, paying the club’s bills, handling payroll and maintaining the general ledger.

The U.S. attorney’s office says she embezzled tens of thousands of dollars from the club between 2007 and June of 2013, mainly by issuing checks to herself without authorization. She quit in September as an audit was about to start. She has repaid $60,000 to the club.

The exact amount embezzled is still being determined.
