SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Police in Salt Lake County have arrested a suspected violent fugitive and his girlfriend after a high-speed chase through a residential area and brief standoff at a home in West Valley City.

West Valley officers began pursuit about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday near 3600 South and 2200 West after they attempted to pull over the 30-year-old suspect on a warrant for aggravated assault.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports (https://tinyurl.com/qbsmulo ) they raced at speeds up to 70 mph on neighborhood streets before the pair bailed out and fled to the home of some acquaintances. Police surrounded the house and the suspects soon surrendered.

The man and his 32-year-old girlfriend remained in the Salt Lake County jail on Wednesday.

Police say pending charges likely will include fleeing police and obstruction of justice.
