CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Authorities say a Charlotte woman and her boyfriend face charges after her 3-year-old son was hospitalized following what police say was a beating.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say 23-year-old Shamika Reaves and 32-year-old Corey McCree are charged with felony child abuse. McCree is also charged with first-degree sex offense and indecent liberties with a child.

Officers responded to a call at a motel on the city’s west side near Interstate 85 on Tuesday. Police said the child found at the scene was not responsive, and was taken to Carolinas Medical Center. Investigators said they talked to medical personnel and determined that the child had been beaten and sexually abused. A statement from police say the child was in critical condition Wednesday.

Reaves and McCree were scheduled to appear in court Wednesday.
