MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. (AP) - The U.S. Marine who fell from an aircraft during a training flight in North Carolina has been identified.

A statement issued by the Marines said it was Lance Cpl. Steven M. Hancock who fell Monday night from an Osprey aircraft about 45 miles west of Marine Corps Air Station New River.

Wednesday’s statement said Hancock was with Marine Medium Tiltrotor Training Squadron 204. It did not release his age or hometown. Marine spokesman Mike Barton did not immediately respond to an email requesting the information.

The Herald-News of Joliet, Illinois, reports that Hancock was from Coal City, Illinois, about 60 miles southwest of Chicago.

Hancock’s body was discovered Tuesday on state forestry land about 95 miles south of Raleigh.

The Marines say the fall is still under investigation.
