WEST MONROE, La. (AP) - A former state lawmaker has died.

Evelyn Blackmon, a retired realtor in Ouachita Parish, died Wednesday. She was 89.

Blackmon, who served one term in the state House of Representatives representing West Monroe’s District 15 seat, was the first woman elected president of the Louisiana Realtors Association and the first woman appointed to the state Board of Commerce and Industry.

Former Gov. Kathleen Blanco, who describes Blackmon as one of her greatest friends when they were two of only five women serving in the Legislature, expressed sympathy upon Blackmon’s death. She says Blackmon was a “high-energy public servant, who believed in economic development and worked hard for her people.”
