DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) - Officials at an eastern Iowa hospital have initiated a $42 million expansion that will add 70,000 square feet of medical space to the facility’s campus.

The Telegraph Herald reports (https://bit.ly/1sYVrSg ) construction began Wednesday at a groundbreaking ceremony for the UnityPoint Health-Finley Hospital in Dubuque.

The expansion project includes a four-story addition to the hospital’s northwest side. Three floors will be dedicated to patient care, with an expanded emergency department, surgical suites and a heart and vascular center. The new emergency department is set to replace the hospital’s current 36-year-old trauma area.

The hospital’s existing outpatient center will also be renovated.

CEO David Brandon says the project is one of the largest for the hospital in several decades. The project is expected to be completed by December 2015.
