EVERETT, Wash. (AP) - A Snohomish County sheriff’s spokeswoman says a 42-year-old female inmate has died in the county jail, where she had been on a drug and alcohol withdrawal watch in the facility’s medical unit.

Spokeswoman Shari Ireton said the woman was being checked by medical personnel every half hour. The Tulalip woman died Thursday afternoon. Her name was not immediately released.

The inmate had been booked Wednesday for investigation of fourth-degree domestic violence assault.

The death is being investigated by the sheriff’s office. The county medical examiner will determine the cause of death.

The Daily Herald of Everett says the jail has been under scrutiny after a series of inmate deaths in recent years. The deaths led to a federal review of operations and claims against the county alleging poor medical care. County officials have been working to improve medical care, increase staffing and reduce the inmate population.
