STEVENSON, Wash. (AP) - A Hood River, Oregon, man who was hiking cross country with his son after their vehicle broke down was swept over a waterfall and killed while trying to cross a creek north of Stevenson.

The Skamania County sheriff’s office says 55-year-old Robert Kahler fell about 15 feet Monday evening and landed on rocks below.

His 31-year-old son, Marcus Kahler of Hood River, was able to make it out of the difficult terrain Tuesday and call for help.

Members from Wind River Search and Rescue located the body Tuesday evening. It was recovered Wednesday in a six-hour high-angle operation involving deputies and search and rescue crews from Clark, Klickitat and Skamania counties.
