SILVER CITY, N.M. (AP) - A wildfire that charred 8 1/2 square miles in southwestern New Mexico now has been fully contained.

The human-caused Signal Fire started burning in grass and timber about 10 miles north of Silver City on May 11 in the Gila National Forest.

Fire managers announced full containment of the blaze on Friday and say six recreational sites in the area now are re-opened.

They say about 100 firefighters and other personnel will remain on hand to patrol fire lines and deal with any flare-ups.
