SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) - A man who hired gang members to kill his new wife in order to collect on a $1 million insurance policy has been sentenced in Orange County to 25 years to life in prison.

Nuzzio Begaren was sentenced Friday for murder and conspiracy.

Begaren married his wife, Elizabeth, a state prison guard, in 1997. Three days later, he took out the life insurance policy.

Authorities say Begaren hired gang members to kill her in January 1998 and make it look like a robbery.

Prosecutors say they followed the family’s SUV, ran it off a road in Anaheim and shot the woman in front of Begaren and his 10-year-old daughter.

The case was cracked by a note the victim had scribbled with the license plate number of the pursuing car.
