BOLTON LANDING, N.Y. (AP) - New York state police say a man has died after crashing his boat on Lake George.

Troopers said Saturday that John Michaels of Bolton Landing was driving the 21-foot Steiger when it hit rocks and trees along the shoreline. The wreck happened at about 10 p.m. Friday.

Police say the 57-year-old suffered massive trauma. He was the only person on the boat.

Troopers say Michaels was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

The Glens Falls Post-Star reports that Michaels was an experienced boater and pilot and a respected businessman and philanthropist.

The paper says he and his brother’s company built over 50 area residential communities.

He volunteered more than 100 times to fly people to distant hospitals for medical treatment and traveled to Guatemala to build schools.
