KEARNS, Utah (AP) - A Kearns man accused of stabbing his mother more than a dozen times has been charged with attempted murder.

Jon Winters also was charged Friday in 3rd District Court with aggravated kidnapping, aggravated burglary and assaulting a police officer.

The 38-year-old Winters is accused of stabbing his 60-year-old mother, Edna Hakala, after showing up at her home the morning of May 16.

Police say he also hit his mother in the head with a hammer, wrapped her head and mouth in duct tape and threatened to cut her head off with an ax.

Officers arrived to find him holding an ax and used a Taser on him after he did not heed orders to drop it.

He was taken to a hospital for a mental evaluation.

Hakala also was taken to a hospital and later reported to be in fair condition.
