LAKEWOOD, N.J. (AP) - Siena swept regular-season champion Canisius 6-5 and 5-1 on Sunday to win its first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament championship since 1999.

The Saints (26-31) are headed to the NCAA tournament for just the second time in program history, and first since their last conference title. It’s a remarkable turnaround for Siena, which opened the season 0-17 and had to win four elimination games in a span of about 30 hours to win the MAAC championship.

In the first game, Siena rallied from a 4-1 deficit to score five times in the eighth inning. Canisius (40-16) scored a run in the ninth, but had its 18-game winning streak ended.

John Rooney gave Siena an early 3-0 lead in the deciding game with a run-scoring fielder’s choice in the first inning, and a two-run double in the third. Taylor Ahearn and two relievers held Canisius to one run and nine hits.
