HERNANDO, Miss. (AP) - DeSoto County supervisors have approved a contract with Murphy and Sons for construction of a second-phase, 268-bed expansion of the new county jail south of Hernando.

The Commercial Appeals reports (https://bit.ly/1osrIkAC ) that Southaven-based builder Murphy’s $8.3 million bid was approved on April 21.

Mike Childress, project consultant with the Memphis-based Evans Taylor Foster Childress architectural-design firm, says work should start June 1.

Meanwhile, the go-ahead on the lockup project frees the county to seek bids on revamping a 20,000-square-foot office building north of the jail for new Sheriff’s Department administrative offices.

Childress says the plan is to wrap up both projects in the summer of 2015, so moves of inmates and staff can come at the same time.

He says bids will be open June 3.
