HAZARD, Ky. (AP) - Kentucky State Police troopers in eastern Kentucky say several people are operating a home improvement scan that’s getting expensive for people who pay.

Trooper Jody Sims told WYMT-TV in Hazard (https://bit.ly/1nIL03W ) that the people involved are altering checks, inflating prices for little or no work and in some cases stealing checks from homeowners.

Sims says one case has been confirmed in Breathitt County and one pending complaint. Troopers have received similar calls coming from Knott, Letcher, and Perry County.

Troopers said always use discretion before allowing anyone to do work at your home.

Investigators are encouraging homeowners to be on alert as they work hard to find whoever is responsible.

They also say the scam possibly involves two men and one woman, but there could be more people.
