ARLEY, Ala. (AP) - Winston County authorities say a boy died after slipping into deep water while he was wading with his younger brother during a family trip.

Sheriff Rick Harris says 7-year-old Joshua Alexander was wading in an area of Smith Lake Sunday and fell into deeper water while adults who were with the children were loading the car.

Harris says the family was in a remote area and drove until they had cellphone coverage. Harris says the family drove to a fire station and the boy was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Authorities say the boys weren’t wearing life jackets at the time, and Alexander had just finished 1st grade.
